{"id":23250,"date":"2025-08-18T15:18:33","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T15:18:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gsrra.com\/?p=23250"},"modified":"2025-08-18T15:18:35","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T15:18:35","slug":"new-zealand-pm-says-netanyahu-has-lost-the-plot-after-palestine-recognition-debate-sees-mp-ejected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gsrra.com\/?p=23250","title":{"rendered":"New Zealand PM says Netanyahu has \u2018lost the plot\u2019 after Palestine recognition debate sees MP ejected"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Green party co-leader Chl\u00f6e Swarbrick accused government MPs of lacking a \u2018spine\u2019 during a debate on whether to recognise a Palestinian state<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As more of its allies make moves to recognise Palestinian statehood, the issue is dominating New Zealand\u2019s politics, with a prominent MP ejected from parliament on Tuesday and the prime minister describing his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu as having \u201clost the plot\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to local media on Wednesday, Christopher Luxon said what was happening in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gaza<\/a>&nbsp;was \u201cutterly, utterly appalling\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think Netanyahu has gone way too far, I think he has lost the plot and I think what we are seeing overnight, with the attack on Gaza City is utterly, utterly unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"abb5e6c9-9bc0-4865-bc9f-569da230f444\"><a class=\"dcr-1m887w9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/aug\/11\/australia-recognise-palestinian-state-palestine-statehood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/9c7773c3667affdcd9c5cd79d8e28b9d1a88cc37\/592_0_6191_4953\/master\/6191.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=e58d994c97d753708e2b745265e088bd\" alt=\"Anthony Albanese and Penny Wong\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Luxon said the Israeli prime minister was \u201cnot listening to the international community\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The prime minister\u2019s comments are among the strongest words of condemnation he has used against Netanyahu but that will be cold comfort for opposition parties who say the government is lagging behind on recognising Palestinian statehood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday, MP Chl\u00f6e Swarbrick was ordered to leave parliament during a heated debate, that was called after the centre-right government said it was weighing up its position on whether to recognise a Palestinian state.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/aug\/11\/australia-recognise-palestinian-state-palestine-statehood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Close ally Australia<\/a>&nbsp;on Monday joined&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jul\/30\/palestinian-statehood-recognition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canada, the UK and France<\/a>&nbsp;in announcing it would recognise a Palestinian state at a UN conference in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Swarbrick, who is co-leader of the Green party, said New Zealand was a \u201claggard\u201d and an \u201coutlier\u201d and the lack of decision was appalling, before calling on some government members to support a bill to \u201csanction Israel for its war crimes\u201d. The bill was proposed by her party in March and is supported by all opposition parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we find six of 68 government MPs with a spine, we can stand on the right side of history,\u201d said Swarbrick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaker Gerry Brownlee said that statement was \u201ccompletely unacceptable\u201d and that she had to withdraw it and apologise. When she refused, Swarbrick was ordered to leave parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brownlee later clarified Swarbrick could return on Wednesday but if she still refused to apologise she would again be removed from parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/aug\/09\/albanese-and-luxon-urge-israel-to-reconsider-gaza-city-takeover-during-warm-generous-meeting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luxon\u2019s government has said it would make a decision in September<\/a>&nbsp;about whether it would recognise Palestine as a state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Netanyahu has been strongly critical of growing international moves to recognise a Palestinian state. \u201cTo have European countries and Australia march into that rabbit hole, just like that, fall right into it,\u201d he said earlier this week. \u201cThis canard is disappointing, and I think it\u2019s actually shameful.
