You might have seen strong gusts of wind that, when they take the form of whirlwinds, sweep away everything in their path. The nearly 2.2 million population of Gaza has been caught in this whirlwind, leaving them without shelter or food. There were over 400 aid centres established by the United Nations and international organisations in Gaza, most of which have now closed down. In their place, the “Gaza Humanitarian Foundation,” jointly established by the United States and Israel in southern and central Gaza, has only created four offices to provide food, which have been operational since May this. After their establishment, rather than distributing aid, these centres have essentially turned into slaughterhouses, with over a thousand beneficiaries falling victim to gunfire within a few months. Yes, these deaths did not occur at the hands of the Israeli military, but rather by the hands of aid workers, meaning that the price of bread is also being collected with blood, and a famine situation has arisen. According to some reports, over a hundred individuals, the majority of whom are children, have succumbed to hunger.

The genocide of the local population and the violation of humanity is not happening in secret; it is occurring openly in the presence of global media (which is restricted from entering Gaza) and social media, making citizens around the world aware. While ordinary people in every region of the world (whether in Europe, America, or South America) are raising their voices according to their means, governments in Europe and America are tightening laws to combat these protest voices. I used to think that if ordinary people were aware of this oppression, governments would have much more access to information.

However, it became clear to me that there is a long history of such attitudes against non-white populations among European ruling classes. Today, let’s discuss this history so that it becomes easier to understand the behaviours of white rulers of Europe and America.

But first, let’s talk about Terra Nullius, meaning “land that belongs to no one.” Historically, this term has been used for land that is barren or uninhabited. However, since the 15th century, in the context of European colonial expansion, it has been applied to areas where indigenous populations existed, but the colonial power deemed the area empty, uninhabited, and suitable for its use. This legal and philosophical viewpoint allowed colonial powers to take control of these lands without recognising the rights of local inhabitants. This principle often became the foundation of legal frameworks and was part of treaties and claims. For example, when colonial nations such as Britain, France, and Spain established new colonies, their claims over the land were based on this principle, allowing them to gain control over the land. This concept denied the rights of local peoples to their land and resources. By declaring the land ownerless, these colonial powers ignored the social, cultural, and legal systems of the indigenous populations. Prominent examples of modern countries formed under this concept include the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. In all these places, when British and other European colonializers arrived, they declared this land “Terra Nullius,” disregarding the presence of the local people. This notion that land could be claimed as unowned facilitated widespread dispossession and the establishment of European settlements. We are captivated by the development and lights of the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, but the original inhabitants of these countries have endured unimaginable atrocities over the past centuries, hidden from our view.

Different terms are used for these inhabitants in these countries, and they have been struggling for their rights for centuries. There is no doubt that this concept reflects a racist and deceitful mentality. Just in 1992, the Australian Parliament denied this concept and recognized the land rights of the indigenous population. This brief preamble is necessary because without it, understanding today’s Palestinian massacre and the apparent indifference of European rulers is not impossible but certainly difficult.

Now, let’s turn our attention to Palestine, where, in the early 20th century, the Balfour Declaration planned to settle European Jews. It is worth noting that at that time, Palestine was part of the Ottoman Empire, which later came under British control. This declaration disregarded Palestinian autonomy and declared their land as a “national home” for another group. Under this, it was assumed that the Palestinian region was entirely devoid of human population. The British colonial mentality, using the concept of “Terra Nullius,” overlooked the centuries-old Arab populations and their rights in Palestine, just as it had done in its other colonies over the past centuries. The initial settlers in Israel were the white Jews from Europe who had suffered centuries of European hatred and genocide.

There is a principle in psychology: “The eyes cannot see what the mind does not know.” Today, when the whole world is labeling the Palestinian massacre as genocide, except for the white ruling classes, the only reason that makes sense is that the concept of “Terra Nullius” is so deeply ingrained within these ruling classes that they cannot see this tragedy.

Disclaimer:
The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official editorial policy or position of “Global Silk Route research Alliance”.
