Pakistan\u2019s demographics position the country as a major catalyst for Bitcoin <\/p>\n\n\n\n

BTC<\/a>$119,452<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 adoption, allowing it to \u201cleapfrog\u201d developed nations, according to Bilal Bin Saqib, Pakistan\u2019s state minister of crypto and blockchain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA global policy shift has happened, not just in Pakistan, but all around the world,\u201d Bin Saqib told Cointelegraph in an exclusive interview. The government of Pakistan moved to regulate crypto<\/a> in November 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The country has 40 million crypto wallets and is one of the \u201ctop five\u201d countries in terms of crypto adoption, which the minister attributed to Pakistan\u2019s young demographic. He told Cointelegraph:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPakistan’s median age is 20. We have 250 million people, and 70% under the age of 30. If Pakistan\u2019s youth were to be a country, it would be the ninth or tenth most populous country on earth.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEmerging markets are what will leapfrog the adoption of these new technologies,\u201d the minister said, with smaller countries\u00a0more likely to adopt Bitcoin<\/a>\u00a0due to their nimble size, allowing them to front-run developed countries. \u201cIt’s easier to make a speedboat move than the Titanic,\u201d Bin Saqib added.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collaborative partnership with El Salvador for Bitcoin development<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pakistan and El Salvador signed a letter of intent<\/a> in July to share education and knowledge about Bitcoin, digital asset infrastructure, and energy development for crypto mining, the minister said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe cooperation is essentially based on how emerging economies that are both under the IMF program can leverage technology and other financial instruments for national growth,\u201d he told Cointelegraph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pakistan\u2019s National Crypto Council<\/a> and other regulatory bodies are seeking input on a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets, licensing crypto exchanges, developing a strategic Bitcoin reserve<\/a>, launching a stablecoin, and mining Bitcoin using excess energy, the minister said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mining Bitcoin with excess and runoff energy sources<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPakistan has a very interesting problem. We have excess electricity, which we pay capacity charges for,\u201d the minister told Cointelegraph. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the country has up to 10,000 megawatts (MW) of excess energy<\/a>, which is a \u201cliability\u201d due to the carrying costs of the electricity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bin Saqib said the country is allocating 2,000 MW for Bitcoin mining<\/a> and AI data centers. The government is also exploring the potential to mine BTC with runoff energy from methane<\/a> and other excess or stranded power sources, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
