The Reko Diq copper-gold project is advancing rapidly, with a significant workforce on-site and major infrastructure development underway, according to a senior Barrick Gold official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Reko Diq Suppliers Roadshow, Geo News <\/em>spoke with Martin Henuse, a senior executive at the mining giant, to discuss the project\u2019s progress, local impact, and long-term vision. Below is their conversation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Question: How is the progress so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henuse: It\u2019s moving incredibly fast. Right now, we have nearly 1,000 employees on-site at Reko Diq. We\u2019ve moved massive amounts of earth, built accommodations, secured a water supply, and started road construction. Everything is on track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Question: Barrick has a legacy of community investment. What\u2019s being done here?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henuse: Our strategy has always been to invest in local communities. Here, we\u2019ve already built schools and hospitals. The growth you\u2019ll see as we scale up will be exponential. The proof? Visit Reko Diq\u2014you\u2019ll see the impact firsthand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Question: Critics claimed this project would exclude locals. How are you ensuring Pakistani participation?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henuse: Our supply chain strategy prioritises local engagement. Every international contractor we work with must establish operations in Pakistan, hire and train locals, and partner with domestic businesses. This isn\u2019t just talk\u2014it\u2019s in our contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Question: The first phase is a $6 billion investment. What\u2019s the status?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henuse: We\u2019ve already purchased major equipment, secured approvals, and are finalising financing. By year-end, we\u2019ll be at full speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Question: What about local suppliers and employment?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henuse: We\u2019ve hired every available worker from the community. When we asked the village elder for more trainees, he said, \u201cYou\u2019ve already taken all our people!\u201d That\u2019s success. Local contractors are already on-site, and we\u2019re expanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Question: The equipment and technology being used\u2014how advanced is it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henuse: This isn\u2019t just a gold mine; it\u2019s enormous compared to typical operations. We\u2019re bringing in 360-ton trucks, cutting-edge tech, and setting up training facilities to upskill workers, from driving light vehicles to operating massive machinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Question: Will training extend to suppliers or just Barrick staff?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henuse: Suppliers must also transfer skills. Initially, they\u2019ll bring foreign experts, but we mandate localisation. Globally, our mines are 95\u2013100% locally staffed. Pakistan will be no different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Question: How confident are you in achieving the first production target of 2028?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henuse: This isn\u2019t our first rodeo. We have top-tier subcontractors, international expertise, and a proven team. Execution is key, and we\u2019re on track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Question: What\u2019s the expected output in Phase 1 vs Phase 2?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henuse: Phase 1: 260,000 tons of copper annually (40 truckloads\/day).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phase 2: 400,000 tons (60 trucks\/day). All are transported via upgraded rail to Port Qasim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Question: Will raw materials be processed locally?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henuse: Not initially. A smelter needs three Reko Diq-scale projects to be viable. We\u2019ll export raw concentrate for refining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Question: Despite negative press, how do you view Pakistan\u2019s potential?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henuse: This is my 40th trip here. I\u2019ve faced zero issues\u2014only good people and progress. We\u2019re committed to building confidence. Barrick believes in Pakistan, and this project will prove it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With billions in revenue, thousands of jobs, and transformative infrastructure, Reko Diq is set to redefine Pakistan\u2019s economic future\u2014and Barrick is all-in to make it happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
