{"id":19570,"date":"2025-05-23T02:28:21","date_gmt":"2025-05-23T02:28:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gsrra.com\/?p=19570"},"modified":"2025-05-23T02:28:23","modified_gmt":"2025-05-23T02:28:23","slug":"pakistan-draws-unscs-attention-to-indias-aggressive-naval-buildup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gsrra.com\/?p=19570","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan draws UNSC\u2019s attention to India\u2019s \u2018aggressive\u2019 naval buildup"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Pakistan brought into sharp focus of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) India\u2019s \u201caggressive naval expansion and efforts seeking to assert dominance over critical waterways\u201d, as the 15-member body discussed \u201cStrengthening Maritime Security.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe categorically reject any attempt in our region to dominate maritime spaces, undermine established legal frameworks, or marginalize the legitimate interests of other coastal states under any guise or pretext,\u201d Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, permanent representative of Pakistan, said in the debate convened by Greece, which holds the Council\u2019s presidency for the month of May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur Oceans must be preserved as arenas for cooperation and shared prosperity, not as theatres of strategic rivalry,\u201d the Pakistani envoy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn our own immediate neighborhood, however, we have witnessed a troubling pattern of behaviour by one major country \u2014 driven by aspirations of unchecked regional hegemony \u2014 marked by aggressive naval expansion, and efforts seeking to assert dominance over critical waterways,\u201d he said in an obvious reference to India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the outset, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the Security Council that All of humanity depends on the world oceans and seas \u2014 from the oxygen we breathe, to the biodiversity that sustains all life, to the economies, trade and jobs supported by maritime industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that today debate shines a light on a fundamental fact: Without maritime security, there can be no global security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his comments, Ambassador Asim, the Pakistani envoy, said that India\u2019s \u201cdestabilizing and dangerous naval build-up is accompanied by coercive diplomacy and the systematic exclusion of neighbouring states from regional maritime security frameworks, including the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA)\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Read more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/arynews.tv\/rafale-india-military-strategy-failed-against-pakistan-baharat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indian security expert blasts New Delhi\u2019s tactics, Rafale\u2019s role in Pakistan conflict<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such actions, he said, undermine the maritime balance and restrict the space for inclusive cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis same country has also displayed a concerning propensity to usurp and weaponize shared natural resources \u2014 including trans-boundary rivers \u2014 in flagrant breach of treaty obligations and the principles of good neighborliness,\u201d Ambassador Asim said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese actions reflect a broader agenda of leveraging geography to disrupt and destabilize long-standing cooperative arrangements, particularly to the detriment of the lower riparian state that is Pakistan, and impose unilateral outcomes, in both riverine and maritime spheres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a maritime nation, Pakistan views the Arabian Sea as its \u2018fifth neighbour,\u2019 integral to its economic vision and strategic orientation.
