Iran executes man accused of spying for Israel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An Iranian<\/strong> man convicted of espionage and intelligence cooperation with Israel<\/strong> was executed on Wednesday, Iranian state media reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entangled in a decades-long shadow war with Israel, Iran has put to death many individuals it accuses of having links with Israel\u2019s the Mossad intelligence service<\/strong> and facilitating the latter\u2019s operations in the country, notably assassinations or acts of sabotage meant to undermine its nuclear programme, reports Reuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Iran\u2019s judiciary media outlet Mizan, the defendant identified as Mohsen Langarneshin<\/strong> was accused of involvement in several cases, including the death of a Revolutionary Guards<\/strong> colonel in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDuring his two years as a spy (\u2026) he was responsible for important actions, including supporting terrorist operations and being present at the scene of the assassination of Sayad Khodai,\u201d state media said. It said the defendant also provided operational support for an attack on an industrial centre in Isfahan<\/strong>, affiliated with the Ministry of Defence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state media reports said Langarneshin had confessed to the charges. Reuters was not able to reach a representative for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this week, Iran\u2019s foreign minister Abbas Araqchi<\/strong> accused Israel of seeking to derail Iran-US nuclear talks<\/strong>, with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/strong> rejecting the idea of limiting Tehran<\/strong>\u2019s uranium enrichment via a deal and pushing for the full dismantlement of its nuclear infrastructure.Share<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US<\/strong> is scheduled to give evidence at the international court of justice (ICJ)<\/strong> in The Hague<\/strong> at 10am, local time (9am BST).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today is the third of five days of proceedings in The Hague <\/a>that may prove critical to Israel<\/strong>\u2019s future within the world body. The UN<\/strong>\u2019s top court will hear from dozens of nations and organisations in order to draw up an advisory opinion on Israel\u2019s humanitarian obligations to Palestinians<\/strong> more than 50 days into its total blockade on aid entering <\/a>Gaza<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UN was the first to address the court on Monday, followed by Palestinian representatives. In total, 40 states and four international organisations are scheduled to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Tuesday, South Africa<\/strong>, a staunch critic of Israel, presented its arguments. In hearings last year in a separate case at the court, the country accused Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza<\/a> \u2013 a charge Israel denies. Today\u2019s evidence will be from the US, Israel\u2019s ally.

The court will probably take months to rule. Experts say the decision, though not legally binding, could profoundly impact international jurisprudence, international aid to Israel and public opinion.Share<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran<\/strong> has citicised \u201cthreats\u201d by France<\/strong> to reimpose sanctions lifted after a landmark 2015 deal on Tehran\u2019s nuclear programme<\/strong>, local media said on Wednesday, citing a letter sent by the country\u2019s UN<\/strong> mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cResorting to threats and economic blackmail is entirely unacceptable,\u201d said the letter published by Iran\u2019s ISNA news agency, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It came after French foreign minister Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot<\/strong> said on Monday that his government along with Germany<\/strong> and the UK<\/strong> \u201cwill not hesitate for a single second to reapply all the sanctions\u201d lifted a decade ago if European<\/strong> security is threatened by Iran\u2019s nuclear activities.Share<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Syria<\/strong> war monitor said on Wednesday that two people including a Druze fighter were killed in overnight clashes as sectarian violence spread to a new area near Damascus<\/strong>, reports Agence France-Presse (AFP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt least two people including a Druze fighter were killed in clashes between gunmen linked to the authorities and local Druze fighters\u201d in Sahnaya<\/strong>, about 15km (nine miles) south west of the capital, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights<\/strong>, also reporting \u201c14 wounded and missing\u201d.Share<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Palestinian news agency Wafa reports that 13 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli strikes on Gaza on Wednesday morning, with more injured. The casualties are reported to include two girls.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Wafa correspondent reported that strikes were carried out by Israel in Gaza<\/a> City and the Nuseirat refugee camp among other locations, and that one fisher was killed by fire from an Israeli gun boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defence minister Katz: Israel’s goal is ‘a clear victory without compromise’ over Hamas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Israel\u2019s defence minister, speaking at a Memorial Day ceremony on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, has said that Israel\u2019s war goal is \u201ca clear victory without compromise\u201d over Hamas.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israel Katz said that those in the IDF who had fought and been killed during Israel\u2019s invasion of the Gaza<\/a> Strip were carrying out a \u201csacred commitment \u2026 to bring home all the kidnapped men and women, both the living and the dead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Katz said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recent US strikes on Yemen<\/strong> have killed more than 100 people, Reuters notes. That figure includes 74 at an oil terminal in mid-April in what was the deadliest strike in Yemen<\/a> under the Donald Trump so far, according to the Houthi-run health ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rights advocates have raised concerns about civilian killings. Houthi-controlled television said on Monday a US airstrike killed 68 people after striking a detention centre for African migrants in Yemen.Share<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US and UK launch joint strikes on Houthis in Yemen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

US and British forces conducted a joint military operation in Yemen<\/a> on Tuesday, according to Britain\u2019s Ministry of Defence, which said the operation was against a Houthi military target responsible for making drones like those used to attack shipping.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A British statement claimed intelligence analysis identified a cluster of buildings located 24 km (15 miles) south of Yemen\u2019s capital Sana\u2019a that were used by the Houthis to manufacture drones of the type used to attack ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is the first time the UK military has attacked Yemen since Donald Trump was inaugurated as US president for the second time. US vice-president JD Vance has been vocally dismissive of European defence capabilities. In March he criticised European forces as \u201csome random country that hasn\u2019t fought a war in 30 or 40 years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
