Tuesday shot down an Indian quadcopter drone near the Line of Control (LoC) in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), state media reported, as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1907228\/pakistan-is-prepared-for-anything-india-might-try\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tensions<\/a>&nbsp;between the two countries linger on in the wake of the Pahalgam attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1905917\/at-least-24-killed-in-occupied-kashmir-gunmen-attack-on-tourists-police-source\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">April 22 attack<\/a>&nbsp;killed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1906075\/pahalgam-attack-india-suspends-indus-waters-treaty-with-immediate-effect-closes-attari-border-crossing#:~:text=at%20least%2026%20people%20were%20killed%2C%20all%20men%2C%20while%20police%20said%20another%2017%20people%20were%20injured\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">26 men<\/a>, mostly tourists, and was one of the deadliest armed attacks in the disputed Himalayan region since 2000. Kashmir Resistance, also known as The Resistance Front, said it \u201cunequivocally\u201d denied involvement in the attack, after an initial message that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1906075\/pahalgam-attack-india-suspends-indus-waters-treaty-with-immediate-effect-closes-attari-border-crossing#:~:text=The%20Resistance%20Front%E2%80%99%2C%20is%20said%20to%20have%20claimed%20responsibility%20for%20the%20attack.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a>&nbsp;responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India, without offering any evidence, has implied cross-border linkages of the attackers, while Pakistan has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1906315\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strongly denied<\/a>\u00a0any involvement. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1906694\/pm-shehbaz-says-pakistan-open-to-neutral-transparent-probe-into-pahalgam-attack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">neutral probe<\/a>\u00a0into the incident.<a href=\"https:\/\/globalsun.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPakistan has successfully shot down an Indian quadcopter along the Line of Control, thwarting a violation of its airspace,\u201d state-run&nbsp;<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/radio.gov.pk\/29-04-2025\/army-shoots-down-indian-quadcopter-along-loc\">Radio Pakistan<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PTVNewsOfficial\/status\/1917106968285548583\">PTV News<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;reported, citing security sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifying the location, security sources said the \u201cenemy attempted to conduct surveillance using a quadcopter\u201d in the Manawar sector of Bhimber district in AJK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Pakistan Army, through timely action, foiled this nefarious attempt by the enemy,\u201d the report added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The security sources termed the incident a \u201cclear testimony to the vigilance, professional skill and defensive preparedness of the Pakistan Army\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Pakistan Army is always ready to give an immediate and effective response to any aggression from the enemy,\u201d the report read, adding that the entire nation stood \u201cunited with the armed forces to give a befitting response to the enemy on every front\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The development comes as Indian and Pakistani soldiers reportedly traded fire along the LoC for a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1906606\/friends-offer-to-help-calm-south-asian-tempers#:~:text=troops%20exchanged%20fire%20overnight%20across%20the%20Line%20of%20Control%20(LoC)%20in%20Kashmir\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fifth straight night<\/a>, after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1609468\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">four years<\/a>&nbsp;of relative calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Indian army said its soldiers and Pakistani forces fired at each other overnight. There was no immediate confirmation from Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India said that overnight from Monday to Tuesday, the gunfire took place in areas opposite the Kupwara and Baramulla districts in held Kashmir, as well as in the Akhnoor sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were no reports of casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the latest of this heated debate, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif yesterday said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1907228\/pakistan-is-prepared-for-anything-india-might-try\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pakistan was ready<\/a>&nbsp;for any incursion by India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have reinforced our forces because it is something which is imminent now. So in that situation, some strategic decisions have to be taken, so those decisions have been taken,\u201d Asif told&nbsp;<em>Reuters<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the military had briefed the government on the possibility of an Indian attack, but did not go into further details on his reasons for thinking an incursion was imminent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=x6vFV3mrIG8\">interview<\/a>&nbsp;with&nbsp;<em>Samaa TV<\/em>, Asif warned there was a \u201cwar looming on the horizon\u201d, and later told&nbsp;<em>Geo News<\/em>&nbsp;that the \u201cnext two to three days were crucial\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Calls have also grown from Indian politicians and others for military action against Pakistan.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1907300\/with-eyes-wide-open\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Analysts<\/a>&nbsp;say they fear bellicose statements will escalate into possible military action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1907326#pakistan-preparing-to-challenge-indus-waters-treaty-suspension-aqeel-malik\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>Pakistan preparing to challenge Indus Waters Treaty suspension: Aqeel Malik<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pakistan is preparing international legal action over India\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1906075\/pahalgam-attack-india-suspends-indus-waters-treaty-with-immediate-effect-closes-attari-border-crossing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suspension<\/a>&nbsp;of the critical&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1906274\/what-indias-indus-waters-treaty-suspension-means-for-pakistan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indus Waters Treaty<\/a>&nbsp;(IWT), Minister of State for Law and Justice Aqeel Malik told&nbsp;<em>Reuters<\/em>&nbsp;late on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malik said Islamabad was working on plans for at least three different legal options, including raising the issue at the World Bank, the treaty\u2019s facilitator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was also considering taking action at the Permanent Court of Arbitration or at the International Court of Justice in the Hague, where it could allege that India has violated the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/legal.un.org\/ilc\/texts\/instruments\/english\/conventions\/1_1_1969.pdf\">1960 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties<\/a>, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLegal strategy consultations are almost complete,\u201d Malik said, adding the decision on which cases to pursue would be made \u201csoon\u201d and would likely include pursuing more than one avenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India\u2019s water resources officials did not immediately respond to&nbsp;<em>Reuters<\/em>\u2019 request seeking comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dawn.com\/primary\/2025\/04\/29144520ca05cd2.jpg\" alt=\" People walk next to a cultivated land on the dry riverbed of the Indus River in Hyderabad on April 25, 2025. \u2014 Reuters\/Yasir Rajput \"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">People walk next to a cultivated land on the dry riverbed of the Indus River in Hyderabad on April 25, 2025. \u2014 Reuters\/Yasir Rajput<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Malik added that a fourth diplomatic option that Islamabad was considering was to raise the issue at the United Nations Security Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll the options are on the table and we are pursuing all appropriate and competent forums to approach,\u201d he said. \u201cThe treaty cannot be suspended unilaterally and cannot be held in abeyance, there is not [such a] provision within the treaty,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the Pahalgam attack, the nuclear-armed nations have unleashed a raft of measures against each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India on April 23&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1906075\/pahalgam-attack-india-suspends-indus-waters-treaty-with-immediate-effect-closes-attari-border-crossing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unilaterally suspended<\/a>&nbsp;the IWT \u2014 a water-sharing agreement that was brokered by the World Bank and has endured through wars and decades of hostility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next day, Pakistan&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1906284\/trade-ties-and-flights-off-limits-as-pakistan-retaliates-to-indias-moves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retaliated<\/a>&nbsp;by threatening to put the Simla Agreement in abeyance and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1906648\/delhi-airport-worst-hit-as-indian-airlines-forced-to-detour-after-pakistan-airspace-ban\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closing its airspace<\/a>&nbsp;for Indian flights. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1906310\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Security Committee<\/a>&nbsp;(NSC) in Islamabad also said \u201cany attempt to stop or divert the flow of water belonging to Pakistan [\u2026] will be considered as an act of war\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The treaty is an agreement for the distribution and use of waters from the Indus River and its tributaries, which feed 80 per cent of Pakistan\u2019s irrigated agriculture and its hydropower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kushvinder Vohra, a recently retired head of India\u2019s Central Water Commission, told&nbsp;<em>Reuters<\/em>: \u201cThere are very limited options [for Pakistan] \u2026 I can say that there are solid grounds for us to defend our action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Government officials and experts on both sides say India cannot stop water flows immediately, because the treaty has allowed it to only build hydropower plants without significant storage or dams on the three rivers allocated to Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But things could start changing in a few months, and farmers, already hit by climate-change-related&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1898669\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">water shortages<\/a>, have raised concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1907326#cyberattacks-on-ministries-websites-foiled\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>Cyberattacks on ministries\u2019 websites \u2018foiled\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a related development, Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja has said that cyberattack attempts on the websites of some ministries were foiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Responding to a query yesterday about cyberattacks&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1907277#:~:text=some%20ministries%20had%20come%20under%20cyberattacks%20from%20India\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from India<\/a>, Khawaja said: \u201cThere were [cyberattacks] on some ministries, but we defended against them successfully. There was no huge issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey were resolved timely,\u201d she told reporters at her ministry\u2019s office in Islamabad, clarifying there was no cyberattack on the IT ministry\u2019s website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khawaja highlighted that the National Cyber Emergency Resp\u00adonse Team (N-Cert) and its provincial counterparts were functional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The minister pointed out that Pakistan had been listed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1868801\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">among the top<\/a>&nbsp;countries in cybersecurity last year, recalling the Top Tier-1 ranking in the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/ITU-D\/Cybersecurity\/Documents\/GCIv5\/2401416_1b_Global-Cybersecurity-Index-E.pdf\">ITU-Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI-V5) 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking on the Pahalgam attack, she asserted Pakistan had always condemned terrorism and advocated peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is in no one\u2019s interest that the situation escalates,\u201d Khawaja said about the ongoing Pakistan-India friction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also yesterday, N-cert, which is responsible for the security of critical digital infrastructure,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1907281#:~:text=impartially%20and%20responsibly%E2%80%9D.-,NCERT%20advisory,-In%20the%20wake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned media and content creators<\/a>&nbsp;against sharing sensitive national security information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an advisory, it noted there had been an \u201cuptick in the circulation of videos, images, and commentary revealing troop movements, military deployments, and sensitive national security activities\u201d on social media and public forums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c Such disclosures \u2014 whether inadvertent or intentional \u2014 may severely compromise national security, jeopardise operational effectiveness, and facilitate hostile actions by adversaries,\u201c N-cert said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The advisory added that disseminating sensitive material may result in a security breach by disclosing the locations and movements of troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1907326#india-shuts-over-half-of-tourist-spots-in-held-kashmir-in-security-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>India shuts over half of tourist spots in held Kashmir in security review<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>More than half of the tourist destinations in India-occupied Kashmir (IoK) have been closed to the public from Tuesday, according to a government order reviewed by&nbsp;<em>Reuters<\/em>, in a bid to tighten security after last week\u2019s attack on holiday-makers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dawn.com\/primary\/2025\/04\/29152229c26daf6.jpg\" alt=\" A traditional Shikara boat is seen in the waters of Dal Lake as the Hazratbal shrine is seen in the background in Srinagar, occupied Kashmir on April 29, 2025. \u2014 Reuters\/Adnan Abidi \"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A traditional Shikara boat is seen in the waters of Dal Lake as the Hazratbal shrine is seen in the background in Srinagar, occupied Kashmir on April 29, 2025. \u2014 Reuters\/Adnan Abidi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The assailants segregated men, asked their names and targeted Hindus before shooting them at close range in the Pahalgam area, killing 26 people, officials and survivors said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The local government has decided to shut 48 of the 87 tourist destinations in IoK and enhanced security at the remaining ones, according to the government document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No time period was given. target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ForeignOfficePk\/status\/1917081781871972487\">said<\/a>&nbsp;on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dar apprised the UAE official of the decisions made by Pakistan\u2019s National Security Committee last week in response to \u201cIndia\u2019s unfounded allegations, inflammatory rhetoric and unilateral actions\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img
