Here\u2019s how that is affecting flights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Key Points<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pakistan\u2019s closure of its airspace to Indian airlines Thursday is forcing carriers to alter some routes that link India to Europe, North America, Central Asia and the Middle East.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Longer routes will cost Indian carriers more in fuel and, in some instances, result in the need to schedule refueling stops or cancel flights altogether.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, airfares may not substantially increase, according to OAG.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Pakistan\u2019s closure of its airspace to Indian airlines Thursday is forcing carriers to alter some routes that link India to Europe, North America, Central Asia and the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indian carriers \u2014 including Air India, IndiGo, Akasa Air and SpiceJet \u2014 must now fly longer, and thus costlier, flights on some westbound routes<strong>.&nbsp;<\/strong>The detour could push some flights to add a refueling stop or cancel certain routes altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IndiGo, the country\u2019s largest airline by market share, said it expects a few international flights to be affected, while Air India said some of its flights to or from North America, Europe and the Middle East will<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>take an alternative extended route. &nbsp;Both statements were made last week on the social media platform X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Air India did not respond to CNBC\u2019s query regarding the number of routes affected. Indigo has stated that around 50 routes may be impacted, while flights to Almaty, Kazakhstan and Tashkent, Uzbekistan have been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbctv18.com\/market\/stocks\/indigo-to-temporarily-cancel-almaty-tashkent-flights-due-to-pakistan-airspace-closure-ws-l-19594809.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">temporarily suspended<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The airspace closure comes amid tit-for-tat reactions from the nuclear-armed neighbors, following the killing of 26 tourists in the scenic town of Pahalgam in the northwestern India-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India has linked the massacre to Pakistani militants, which Pakistan denies. Pakistan has called for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india\/india-pakistan-exchange-gunfire-2nd-day-ties-plummet-after-attack-2025-04-26\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a \u201cneutral\u201d probe<\/a>&nbsp;into the incident that has reignited tensions over the long-disputed territory claimed by both countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>New routes and refueling stops<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Air India flight A1101 from New Delhi to New York on Saturday stopped in Copenhagen to refuel, according to the global flight tracking service FlightRadar24. The flight, which is normally non-stop, arrived nearly six hours after its normal arrival time, according to its website. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same flight on Friday diverted to Vienna, arriving some four hours behind schedule, according to FlightRadar24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/108104135-17399373201739937316-38524851370-1080pnbcnews.jpg?v=1739937319&amp;w=750&amp;h=422&amp;vtcrop=y\" alt=\"India's aviation market could see 15% growth in next decade: Air India Express\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pakistan\u2019s restrictions may also make it harder for Indian carriers to compete with other airlines, which can continue to fly over Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The closure of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/10\/25\/china-sees-global-airlines-cut-flights-or-quit-totally-amid-weak-demand.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia\u2019s airspace led some European airlines to reduce, and in some instances, withdraw services to China,<\/a>&nbsp;as the cost of flying around Russia was far higher for European carriers than for Chinese carriers, which were not subject to the restrictions. However, Russia \u2014 and its airspace \u2014 is significantly larger than Pakistan\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indian airlines operate the bulk of international flights in the country, with more than 9,000 international departures scheduled this month, according to the aviation analytics company Cirium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of these, Air India is scheduled to fly 519 flights to Europe, and 309 to North America, Cirium data showed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the airline \u201ccan overfly Russia to reach North America\u201d on some flights, a Cirium representative told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/cnbc-travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNBC Travel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many flights that link northern Indian cities to the Middle East fly directly over Pakistan \u2013 a key region for Indian workers and leisure travelers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Half (49.3%) of outbound travel from India in 2023 was to the Middle East, according to the 2024 India Tourism Data Compendium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-datawrapper wp-block-embed-datawrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"Top 10 markets for outbound travel from India\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/F2ZVw\/3\/#?secret=GvJfQwU1Ge\" data-secret=\"GvJfQwU1Ge\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"427\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The United Arab Emirates is the most popular destination, attracting some 7.2 million Indian nationals \u2014 of which 50% are Indian migrant workers, 41% are made up of leisure and recreational travelers, while the remaining 9% are business travelers<strong>,<\/strong>&nbsp;according to India\u2019s tourism data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Higher prices?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Indian carriers will pay a price, but passengers may not see airfares go up by much because of Pakistan\u2019s airspace closure,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>said John Grant, chief analyst at the aviation intelligence company OAG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s symbolic more than anything majorly disruptive for India\u2019s airlines,\u201d he said. \u201cThese types of things on their own are unlikely to lead to an increase in airfares.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A five-month closure of Pakistan\u2019s airspace to Indian carriers in 2019 cost the airlines around 7 billion Indian rupees ($82 million), according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/business\/aviation\/pakistan-airspace-closure-hit-indian-carriers-durations-fuel-cost-9963891\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">local media<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Airfares on at least one route, however, have already dropped. April is typically the most expensive month to fly from New Delhi to Srinagar \u2014 the largest city in Jammu and Kashmir \u2014 with average prices ranging from $175 to $255, according to Google Flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next week, flights to the city, home to around 1.2 million people, are selling for $150, the website showed. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/108137082-1745800071392-gettyimages-2210929348-AFP_436R64D.jpeg?v=1745800118&amp;w=1858&amp;h=1045&amp;vtcrop=y\" alt=\"An Indian paramilitary serviceman keeps watch in Pahalgam, south of Srinagar on April 23, 2025, following an attack.
