Here are Few of the Past Instances"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em><strong>The NYT has noted that \u201cthe direct language\u201d Modi has used against Muslims contrasts with the image he presents globally.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, the Hindutva Right and BJP leaders have often used \u201c<em>puncturewalla<\/em>\u201d, a colloquial term for someone who repairs tyre punctures, as a slur against working-class Muslims in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday (April 14), Prime Minister Narendra Modi ostensibly criticised the Congress party\u2019s policies regarding the Waqf Board and said, \u201cIf it had been used as per its purpose, then today, my Muslim youth would not have had to spend their lives fixing punctures on bicycles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While pretending that he was merely implying that the Congress\u2019s policies had left Muslims economically disadvantaged, he referenced the occupation in a way that perpetuates stereotypes about the community in line with the more direct slurs used by his supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since his days as Gujarat\u2019s chief minister, Modi has made a series of controversial statements about Muslims that have drawn widespread criticism for furthering anti-Muslim hatred and deepening communal divides in the country. His most notorious Islamophobic remarks include calling Muslims \u201cinfiltrators\u201d, mocking their family size, referring to relief camps as \u201cbaby-producing centres\u201d and repeatedly using dog whistles to vilify the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modi often uses coded language, but the intent and target are widely recognised by his supporters, analysts and even victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/22\/world\/asia\/modi-speech-muslims.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a>&nbsp;in April 2024, \u201cthe direct language used against the country\u2019s largest minority was a contrast to the image Prime Minister Narendra Modi presents on the world stage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modi has often used indirect language and dog whistles, such as references to \u201cappeasement\u201d, \u201cvote bank politics\u201d, \u201cMughals\u201d (historical Muslim rulers) and \u201coutsiders\u201d, to suggest Muslims are disloyal or a threat to the Hindu majority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His anti-Muslim rhetoric has been most explicit during election campaigns, especially when seeking to polarise Hindu voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a Human Rights Watch report, Modi made anti-Muslim remarks in at least&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thewire.in\/communalism\/modi-islamophobic-remarks-110-of-173-campaign-speeches-hrw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">110 out of 173 speeches<\/a>&nbsp;during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, wrongly accusing the opposition of favouring Muslims and fostering fear among Hindus through disinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His speeches included untrue claims that the opposition \u2018only promoted Muslim rights\u2019 and that Muslims would be given priority access to resources, furthering the narrative of Muslims as outsiders or threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BJP, under Modi\u2019s leadership, has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thewire.in\/communalism\/animated-videos-latest-in-bjps-arsenal-spread-anti-muslim-hate-and-disinformation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released campaign videos<\/a>&nbsp;depicting Muslims as threats, such as one showing opposition leader Rahul Gandhi placing an egg marked \u2018Muslims\u2019 into a nest, and another accusing the Congress of planning to redistribute resources to Muslims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a list of some of the past instances where Modi has used anti-Muslim slurs in his public speeches that have been reported by the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Baby-producing centres\u2019\/\u2018Baby factories\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the 2002 Gujarat riots, Modi was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sabrang.com\/tribunal\/volI\/annex\/annex10.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;to have referred to relief camps for Muslim riot victims as \u201cbaby-producing centres\u201d or \u201cbaby factories\u201d, perpetuating the stereotype of Muslims as hyper-fertile and a demographic threat. \u201cWhat should we do? Run relief camps? Should we open child-producing centres?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a campaign rally, he insinuated that relief camps for riot-affected Muslims might turn into \u201cbaby factories\u201d, implying Muslims have large families and do not deserve relief from the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Unseen enemies\u201d and \u2018love jihad\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modi has repeatedly referenced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6984269\/modi-election-indian-muslims-essay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cunseen enemies\u201d and warned against&nbsp;<em>\u2018zalim<\/em>&nbsp;[cruel] love<\/a>\u201d, alluding to the conspiracy theory of \u201clove jihad\u201d, which falsely claims Muslim men seduce Hindu women to convert them to Islam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In May 2024, he spoke of \u201cunseen enemies\u201d working to divide society and claimed opposition parties were playing into the hands of \u201cinfiltrators\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018<\/strong><strong><em>Hum paanch, hamare pachees<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modi&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sabrangindia.in\/spewing-hate-slurring-muslims-an-unchecked-decade-long-diatribe-by-bharatiya-janata-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mocked Muslim family size<\/a>&nbsp;with the phrase \u201c<em>hum paanch, hamare pachees<\/em>\u201d (\u2018We five, our twenty-five\u2019), a derogatory reference to polygamy and large families among Muslims. \u201cSome people have a tradition: Hum paanch, hamare pachees,\u201d he shouted during the 2002 Gujarat assembly poll campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Pink revolution\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modi accused the Congress government of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sabrangindia.in\/spewing-hate-slurring-muslims-an-unchecked-decade-long-diatribe-by-bharatiya-janata-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">promoting a \u201cpink revolution\u201d<\/a>, referring to the meat industry, especially beef, implying that Muslims were being favoured and that Hindu interests were being undermined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2013, during the campaign to be elected as prime minister, Modi said, \u201cWho is benefiting from the pink revolution?
