{"id":11408,"date":"2024-12-11T03:38:24","date_gmt":"2024-12-11T03:38:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gsrra.com\/?p=11408"},"modified":"2024-12-11T03:38:27","modified_gmt":"2024-12-11T03:38:27","slug":"team-including-pakistani-researcher-wins-super-computing-nobel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gsrra.com\/?p=11408","title":{"rendered":"Team including Pakistani researcher wins super-computing \u2018Nobel\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A team of researchers, including a Pakistani academic, has been awarded the \u2018Nobel Prize of super-computing\u2019 for developing a smart predictive modelling for climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/awards.acm.org\/bell\">Gordon Bell Prize<\/a>&nbsp;is an annual award for groundbreaking achievements in high-performance computing (HPC) and innovative parallel computing contributions toward solving the climate crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zubairkhalid.org\/\">Dr Zubair Khalid<\/a>, an associate professor at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (Lums), is the first Pakistani to have been selected for the award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), which presented the award, said the team won the award for their&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1109\/SC41406.2024.00008\">project<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cBoosting Earth System Model Outputs and Saving PetaBytes in Their Storage Using Exascale Climate Emulators\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Group bags honour for smart predictive modelling for climate events<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Khalid told&nbsp;<em>Dawn<\/em>&nbsp;that their project was a \u2018smart climate model\u2019 that surpassed traditional climate models that take a \u201clong time to run and produce enormous amounts of data that are difficult to store and analyse\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur emulator acts like a highly intelligent, compact version of these models,\u201d he said, adding that their tool also reduces the energy footprint of climate modelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInstead of running full simulations, it can predict climate patterns accurately and quickly by using smaller data inputs and advanced algorithms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The emulator would enable \u201csignificant advancements\u201d in how \u201cwe understand, predict, and respond to climate-related phenomena both at the local and global scale\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As extreme weather events become a new normal, traditional climate models, Dr Khalid said, often struggle to provide precise, localised predictions due to computational limitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe ExaScale Climate Emulator significantly improves accuracy and speed in forecasting these events and therefore enabling timely and accurate flood predictions, enhanced forecasts of hurricanes and tropical storms, and precise heatwave predictions,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also provides climate data at an exceptionally fine scale (km scale in space and hours in time) that enables localised disaster readiness in small towns and communities overlooked by broader models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their tool can be used to help farmers optimise sowing schedules and irrigation strategies based on highly localised weather and climate forecasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This emulator would make a \u201ctangible difference in Pakistan\u201d by bringing climate science closer to real-life solutions that protect lives and livelihoods, according to Dr Khalid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking about his role in the research team, Dr Khalid said his work focused on \u201cintegrating spatial data analysis and modelling tools\u201d for faster and accurate emulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is an \u201cincredibly humbling honour\u201d to be the first Pakistani to receive this prestigious award, he told&nbsp;<em>Dawn<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor me, this recognition is not merely personal, it is a profound honour to represent Pakistan on the global stage and contribute to addressing one of the most pressing global challenges of our time,\u201d he said, hoping the achievement would inspire young scientists in Pakistan to pursue research and innovation, knowing that their work can make a global impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reference Link:- <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1877825\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1877825<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A team of researchers, including a Pakistani academic, has been awarded the \u2018Nobel Prize of super-computing\u2019 for developing a smart predictive modelling for climate.
