“Single-bamboo drifting,” a water sport that evolved from timber transportation in ancient times, involves remarkable balance. Indeed, such is the level of skill required that it’s become an integral part of life in Zunyi, a city in southwest China’s Guizhou Province, much to the benefit of locals. Eleven-year-old Yang Yunqi is one of many who has gained from single-bamboo drifting. Once frail and frequently ill, she has greatly improved her physical fitness by training for the sport.
