Zamir Ahmed Awan is the founder and Chair of the Global Silk Route Research Alliance,
a think tank in Islamabad.

He studied engineering at Shanghai University in the 1980s, and years later he went
back to China as Pakistan's science counsellor in Beijing, from 2010 until 2016,
working on science and higher education cooperation between the two countries. When
he came home he set up the China Study Centre at NUST. He retired from there.

He writes about CPEC and the Belt and Road, and about what China's rise means for
Pakistan. His articles run in Modern Diplomacy and on Think Tank Pakistan, and China
Daily and China News Service have both quoted the work.

Chairman profile

履历

Entries below are drawn from published sources. Items marked "to confirm" are not published anywhere until the chairman confirms them.

Chair of the Global Silk Route Research Alliance.
Confirmed by a China Daily interview published 28 August 2026, and by GSRRA's own Chinese coverage, which renders the title as 全球丝绸之路研究联盟主席.
Born 1962.
Hebei University, Institute for Cross-Cultural Communication, guest researcher page, published 26 March 2019. The Chinese text gives 1 March 1962.
Mechanical engineering, bachelor's and master's, Shanghai University.
Hebei University gives the degree pair and says he went to China in the early 1980s; its Chinese text gives 1980. LinkedIn gives 1981 to 1987. The two disagree on the year, so no year is stated here. This is what the "Engr." in his title refers to.
Science counsellor at the Pakistan Embassy in Beijing, 2010 to March 2016, working on science, technology and higher-education cooperation between Pakistan and China.
Hebei University names Beijing and gives the dates, and calls the post Science Counsellor (Technical Affairs). Baidu Baike calls it Science and Education Counsellor. The sources agree on the role and disagree on its exact title, so the general term is used here.
Returned to Islamabad in 2016 and joined the Chinese Studies Centre of Excellence at NUST. Has since retired from NUST.
Hebei University for the 2016 return and the appointment. The retirement is confirmed by the chairman himself, 4 October 2026. ZGCTA, a GSRRA partner, recorded the title Deputy Director on 4 July 2025; that source is over a year old, he is no longer in post, and the two descriptions differ, so no title is stated here.
His work has centred on explaining CPEC inside Pakistan; his main research interest is the Belt and Road.
Hebei University: "Currently, he is generating awareness of CPEC in Pakistan" and "His major area of research is One Belt One Road".
Writes and speaks in Chinese as well as English; author of reports, newspaper articles and research papers, and interviewed on Pakistani and Chinese television and radio.
Hebei University, which also records that he is fluent in Chinese.
Quoted by Chinese state media beyond China Daily.
China News Service, via the State Council Information Office, July 2023, on CPEC.
